TL;DR - back up all accounts and communities from LJ, they may disappear at any time.

from [livejournal.com profile] yuidirnt's post Regarding the recent suspensions
You might or might not have noticed, but in the past month or so many journals have been suspended without warning or notification by LJ. This appears to be because LJ implemented a new script to catch spambots, except this new script seems to potentially mark as spam any post containing links that go out of the site (to Mega, MediaFire, etc.) Once a journal has been marked as "spambot," it will be deleted without warning or notice.
from [personal profile] dawn_felagund's post "It has begun"
At the risk of succumbing to a slippery slope here, my main worry concerns item 6.1.1: "The Administration reserves the right to delete Account and Blog if User did not access the Account or the access was restricted for more than six months due to a breach hereof." There is a lot of fandom history on LJ on journals owned by people no longer active in the fandom, and possibly no longer even reachable. Now spambots are obviously less desirable on a site than old journals that haven't been updated since the Second Age, but content = server space = money, and an unused journal isn't holding its weight in terms of ad views either. It's digital dead weight.
If anyone wants help backing up to DW, please let me know!

It's sad what's happened to LJ. I have already backed up my LJ to here, and don't post on LJ now. Thanks for the info.

Every time I think I have resigned myself to the other inanity of this move, I see another helpful post trying to stem the tide and I just see red again *grr*

Archived journals on LJ still seem okay at present. My friend Scarlatti died 11 years ago and we set her journal to memorial status. I just went back and read some of her posts.

So sad what's happening to LJ. I am mostly on DW now, but I still have friends who are unable or unwilling to move over or who only pop in once in a blue moon...It's sad to think of losing contact forever if something goes wrong...

Wouldn't that apply to every single journal on the site? Or are only new posts with external links getting flagged, meaning abandoned journals are the safest? I haven't posted since April and maybe I shouldn't....

Well! That solves my quandary about deleting my journal. If I do nothing it will vanish anyway.
