There was a mainly peaceful protest about Ferguson, etc. Some violent splinter groups broke some windows during a mainly peaceful demo, so the Berkeley Police decided to teargas the entire area. Including all the usual students on a Saturday night before finals week, a couple of hundred elderly people who’d been to a concert down the street, and us. My daughter was crying and I can still feel the gas it in my throat after a large glass of juice and a tea with honey.

We like to think our town is better than that. There has to be another way.

WTF, Berkeley Police?!?!? There are better ways! Tear gassing civilians should be a last resort sort of thing!

I'm really disturbed by the way that so many police departments are making the choice to escalate conflict with the citizenry. I remember a Hill Street Blues episode where the Sergeant said during the Morning Briefing: "We need to come at people with more peace than they know how to handle. We need to be kinder, be gentler, than they ever are to us. That's our job. We're the good guys."

They are encouraging anyone who was affected by the tear gas to file a excessive force complaint with the department. You'll have to decide if the effort is worthwhile, but if you have the spoons it may have an impact.

How awful. :( They just seem to chuck that horrible stuff around like air-freshener now.

I wish that peaceful protests could really be peaceful and that there didn't always have to be those people who wanted to turn things violent. Not that tear-gassing an entire area is the most sensible or safest way to deal with a few violent protestors...

This is my concern in Seattle. We've had peaceful demos pretty much every night, but we do have a few assholes, & the cops are really focused on protecting *~holiday shopping~*. I'm definitely more concerned about the cops. I'm so sorry that happened to you guys.

This is so disturbing. If your place isn't sensible, there isn't much hope for the rest of the country.

I am really sorry.

I hope you and your daughter are okay. I hate that they made her cry.
